What will Antwerp give you?

Probably more than it reveals at first glance.

Antwerp does not try to impress immediately. Its energy lives in the details: an Art Nouveau façade, a hidden gallery, an independent bookshop, a table filling up around aperitivo time.

This guide starts from there: places to see, neighbourhoods to explore and addresses that reveal different ways of living the city.

ZUID — START WITH ART

If you want to understand Antwerp, start with Zuid.

Art, photography, design and everyday life come together here naturally. Visit FOMU, then wander around Waalsekaai, Vlaamsekaai and the surrounding streets, where galleries, design stores, cafés and restaurants blend into the neighbourhood.

Step inside simply because something caught your eye.

Best for: photography, contemporary art, design, long walks.

ZURENBORG — LOOK UP

Zurenborg is made for looking up. Art Nouveau façades, balconies and eclectic details turn the neighbourhood into an open-air architecture walk. Start from Cogels-Osylei, then move between Transvaalstraat and Dageraadplaats without following a strict route. Let the houses decide where to stop.

Best for: architecture, details, slow walks, unexpected beauty.

BLUE & BABY BELUGA — FIND YOUR LOOK

Fashion in Antwerp is about discovery as much as big names. To find Semicouture, stop by BLUE and Baby Beluga: two different multibrand stores that share the city’s instinct for personal selection. The point is not to find the perfect look, but the piece that changes what you had in mind.

Best for: Semicouture, contemporary fashion, new discoveries, personal style.

HET EILANDJE — FOLLOW THE WATER

Move towards Het Eilandje and the atmosphere changes.

Water, former warehouses, contemporary architecture and traces of Antwerp’s industrial past create a neighbourhood that still feels in evolution.

Walk along the docks, stop for a drink and let the city centre feel suddenly far away.

Best for: waterfront walks, architecture, sunsets, drinks.

BORGERHOUT — GO A LITTLE FURTHER

Not everything worth seeing is in the centre. Borgerhout feels more local, multicultural and less polished, with neighbourhood shops, small restaurants and a creative scene mixed into everyday life.

Go for something to eat, walk around and simply observe.

Sometimes moving a few stops beyond the obvious route is enough to understand a city better.

Best for: local life, food, different perspectives, wandering.

ONE LAST THING

Antwerp does not reveal itself all at once. It asks you to look closer: turn into a side street, stop in front of a façade, enter a shop because the window caught your attention.

It is creative without needing to say so.

Walk slowly. Notice the details.

The most interesting things here are rarely the ones trying hardest to be seen.
